Ep 23. What Makes a Great Coach? Ft. Lou Caffazo
Show Notes

School is around the corner, and that means sports is also back!

All the players and coaches are excited to the courts and field this fall, which means coaches are starting to prepare for tryouts and practices.

If you are new to coaching or looking to hear a fresh perspective on coaching, this episode is for you! Today, I bring in Lou Caffazo, the Athletic Director at Appleby College. Lou has been immersed in sports his entire life. Lou spent roughly 8 years playing in the CFL mostly as an offensive lineman. He was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the 3rd round in 1989 and played for them for 5 years before being traded to his hometown the Hamilton Tigers Cats. After his professional career in Football, he spent 17 years working at McMaster University in various roles including being the Full Time Assistant Coach to the McMaster Marauder Football team.

In this episode we chat about:

  1. Who were Lou's favourite coaches growing up? What made them special?
  2. His experience being coached in the CFL
  3. How do you gain the respect of your players as a rookie coach?
  4. How do you handle star players on your team?
  5. Should coaches be focusing on skill development or winning at a young age?
  6. What should rookie coaches be doing on their first day of the job?
  7. Is there a good way to cut athletes off of a team?
  8. What makes a great coach?

plus much more!
